Motel Sundown + The Gleeman (support)
A hugely attractive Friday night featuring the return of Motel Sundown, who played a highly popular Sunday session for us last summer, plus as a special bonus the first Sound Lounge appearance of The Gleeman.
Liverpool-based Americana band Motel Sundown consist of songwriters Karen Turley, Naomi Campbell and Robert Johnson. Formed in 2018, they combine the sounds they grew up with such as The Beatles, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, with three-part harmonies inspired by the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
In 2022 they released their debut album 'If You Were Listening', produced by Mercury Prize nominee Andy Ross and featuring pedal steel legend Gerry Hogan. Motel Sundown have since been performing both as a full band accompanied by piano, drums and bass, and as an acoustic trio. In this format, they've opened for such notables as the Hanging Stars, Ashley Campbell, the Chapin Sisters and more recently, Courtney Marie Andrews.
In June 2023 the band performed at Black Deer Festival after winning a slot via public vote through the Black Deer Emerging Competition, and returned in 2024 to play the Caffe Nero stage. BBC Introducing, BBC Radio Ulster and Liverpool Live have remained great supporters since Motel Sundown's first single, 'Chicago', in 2019 and the band were recently titled ‘artist of the week’ on The Late Show on BBC Radio Ulster (Belfast) with Eve Blair. The band were also given a prestigious two-page interview in Maverick magazine.
The title track from 'If You Were Listening' was added to Apple Music’s Today’s Country playlist, and has gained over 30,000 streams. The album has also had over 20,000 Spotify streams. After a cross-country summer 2023 tour, they had sellout shows this spring at Green Note in London and Liverpool Philharmonic Music Rooms, and released their first EP, 'El Dorado,' in late June.
“After all their time playing in Liverpool, it's no surprise their sound is already honed and song craft accomplished.” AMERICANA UK
After widespread coverage from NME, My Weekly, the Evening Standard and others, airplay from BBC Radio 2, Boom Radio and an appearance on BBC One's Sunday Morning Live, classic singer-songwriter The Gleeman's debut album 'Something To Say' is coming soon.
The Gleeman (real name Dean Morris) was immersed in music during his small-town Cornish upbringing, writing songs from his late teens onwards but stuck them all in a drawer. Life took over and his latent aspirations remained so until his children had grown up and his mother’s, then father’s descent into dementia propelled him to finally pursue his musical passion in his late 40s. He's opened for Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff), Starsailor, Damien Dempsey and others and 'Something To Say' is accompanied by a string of UK shows.
"A track that is just so pure and fun - what a dose of dopamine!" - BBC Introducing's Honor Morrison on 'Marie' from 'Something To Say'
