Silent Film Pioneers: A Retrospective of Female Directors from the Silent Film Era
A SHOWCASE OF FEMALE SILENT FILMMAKERS
The 2023 Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival is proud to highlight a special retrospective of Women Filmmakers from the Silent Film Era. This showcase will highlight four female pioneers of cinema: Lois Weber, Alice Guy- Blaché, Mabel Normand, and Lotte Reiniger. All four women helped push the boundaries of cinema to new and expansive heights through the creation of new genres, styles, and inventive use of the film camera. Lois Weber's film Suspense is known as one of the first thrillers, Alice Guy-Blaché is known for creating the very first narrative fiction films, Mable Normand helped to revolutionize the comedic short film and champion Charlie Chaplin in the early stages of his career, and Lotte Reiniger made history when she directed and produced the world's first color animated feature film (The Adventure of Prince Achmed) in 1926.
Come and discover these incredible cinematic legends as RIIFF highlights their works in a special one-of-a-kind presentation at the Providence Performing Arts Center. The films will be presented with live music accompaniment by world renowned organist Peter Krasinski. This special evening will begin at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 11th. The evening's program includes: Suspense, directed by Lois Weber (1913, 10 min); The Consequences of Feminism, directed by Alice Guy-Blaché (1905, 7 min); Mabel's Strange Predicament, directed by Mabel Normand (1914, 12 min); The Adventure of Prince Achmed, directed by Lotte Reiniger (1926, 66 min).
